1603 Etched Horn commemorating King James I
This etched horn depicts the coronation of James Stewart VI of Scotland when he becomes James Stuart I of England, making the horn a Coronation Commemorative.
All three male figures are the same person, but in different dress. That person is James Stewart (Scottish spelling), who starts out at the top in the North with the heavier clothing as James VI of Scotland, sails south to bury the Old Queen (Elizabeth I) and is then crowned James I of England at the bottom of the horn.
What dates this horn and makes it a true and contemporary Commemorative of the Coronation in 1603 are the flags on the ship, which reveal an early design for the new union flag - the forerunner of the Union Jack, which was not adopted officially until 1603.
